Born in a gritty Northern steel town in 1959, early influences were Marvel and DC comics (from which he taught himself to draw), rock music, motorbikes and girls. Nothing’s changed there then. When a one year art foundation course led nowhere, Ray became a crane driver at the local steelworks until he was laid off during the steel strike of ’79. After a spell as a chef, he became a commercial sculptor moulding life-size fibreglass dinosaurs for theme parks. When the company folded, he went back to art school and graduated in Fine Art Painting at Exeter College of Art in 1984. He tried being an art teacher and tutored for the Open College of the Arts before settling to graphic design where he has remained for some 18 years.
When not designing magazines, adverts and business cards, Ray retreats to his world of sensual ladies. His chosen media are pencil and conté on paper and oil on canvas. He publishes prints of the originals.
Ray has always erred on the classy side of eroticism, preferring to leave something to the imagination. His work explores the gender messages that sexy clothing suggests and accentuates. He teases a ‘super-femaleness’ from his subjects through their poses and posture.
