Roger Kockaerts is a belgian artist, living and working in Brussels.
His series of erotic maithuna scenes uses the orotype process, an alternative process derived from the early 20th century orotone, where a positive silver-gelatine image on glass is backed by a gold medium and sealed in a wooden frame. Under specific lighting conditions the orotone "glitters like a solid golden object". The more recent orotype uses a chemically inert polyester film with a silver-gelatin emulsion. The orotype is permanently mounted on a 100% celulose paper.
The 'Maithuna' (Sanskrit for sexual union) project is based on a series of erotic rock sculptures and bas-reliefs of Indian temple walls, originating from as early as the tenth century.
